Information Requests
The release of information by the BC Vital Statistics Agency is governed by both the Vital Statistics Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
The BC Vital Statistics Agency records both medical and non medical information related to the following vital events: birth, death, marriage and change of name. Statistics related to these vital events may be requested. If the information required does not fall within these categories, the following links may be of further assistance.
For Health related information see Ministry of Health - Reports and Publications.
For information related to the Province of British Columbia see BC Stats.
Aggregate data and statistics may be requested by any interested parties. Prior to requesting custom statistics it is recommended that the interested party ensure that the information is not already available in one of the BC Vital Statistics Regular Publications.
Event related information including personal identifiers may be requested by certain individuals and organizations as defined by section 41.1 of the Vital Statistics Act. The request for such information will require an Information Sharing Agreement drawn up between the BC Vital Statistics Agency and the interested party and will result in fees and expenses being charged for the custom service and resulting data.
Individuals or organizations requiring data for research purposes may be able to meet their requirements in a more timely and cost effective manner through Population Data BC who oversee a complete set of vital event data on our behalf.
