  • In 2002, there were 2 Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) for drug-induced deaths. These two LHAs and their SMRs for drug-induced deaths in 2002 (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side (27) 6.28
    161 Vancouver City Centre (16) 1.91

  • The above noted LHAs also had statistically significant and high SMRs in the five-year period from 1997-2001.

  • In 2002, 30 LHAs had no drug-induced deaths and there were no LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs (based on five or more deaths).

  • There were five LHAs with statistically significant and high SMRs in the 1997-2001 period. The SMRs for these LHAs (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side (296) 7.55
    040 New Westminster (83) 2.15
    161 Vancouver City Centre (132) 1.81
    061 Greater Victoria (206) 1.57
    165 Vancouver Midtown (87) 1.48

  • In the 1997-2001 period, 17 LHAs had statistically significant and low SMRs (based on five or more drug-related deaths). The six LHAs with the lowest SMRs (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
    002 Cranbrook (5) 0.33
    069 Qualicum (8) 0.36
    038 Richmond (41) 0.39
    060 Peace River North (7) 0.39
    037 Delta (27) 0.44
    020 Salmon Arm (8) 0.44

  • Seven LHAs had no drug-induced deaths in the 1997-2001 period. These were Golden, Armstrong-Spallumcheen, North Thompson, Bella Coola Valley, Snow Country, Central Coast, and Stikine/Telegraph Creek. All of these except for North Thompson also had no drug-induced deaths in 2002.
