- There were 279 deaths in the province from drug-induced causes in 2002. This grouping of underlying causes of death includes accidental drug poisonings, suicides involving drugs and adverse effects of drugs.
- Two thirds (65.9%) of drug-induced deaths in 2002 were males (184), compared to 95 female deaths.
- Drug-induced deaths occurred in every age group. Almost half (48.7%) of the drug-induced deaths in the province occurred in the 25-44 age group (136 deaths) and another 38.0% were aged 45-64 (106 deaths).
- For males, 91.9% of drug-induced deaths were in the 25-44 and 45-64 age groups combined (169 deaths). Female drug-induced deaths were similarly concentrated in these age groups, and accounted for 76.8% of female deaths (73) in this category.
