  • There were 16 LHAs with statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMRs) for alcohol-related deaths (based on five or more deaths) in 2002. The ratios for the five highest (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    083 Central Coast (5) 9.01
    092 Nisga'a (5) 8.22
    029 Lillooet (8) 4.03
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side (79) 3.24
    030 South Cariboo (12) 2.92

  • All of the above LHAs also had statistically significant and high SMRs for alcohol-related deaths in 1997-2001.

  • There were 11 LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for alcohol-related deaths (based on five or more deaths) in 2002. The five LHAs with low SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    069 Qualicum (9) 0.33
    038 Richmond (33) 0.48
    043 Coquitlam (39) 0.54
    166 Vancouver South (30) 0.56
    044 North Vancouver (36) 0.63

  • In the 1997-2001 period, there were 32 LHAs with statistically significant and high SMRs for alcohol-related deaths. The five LHAs with the highest statistically significant SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    087/094 Stikine/Telegraph Creek (18) 4.94
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side (552) 4.29
    083 Central Coast (12) 3.83
    053 Upper Skeena (32) 3.37
    029 Lillooet (29) 2.94

  • In the 1997-2001 period, there were 18 LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for alcohol-related deaths. The five LHAs with the lowest statistically significant SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
