• The deaths identified as medically treatable (see Glossary) occurred across the province, although the numbers were relatively small in Local Health Areas (LHAs) outside the lower mainland. In 2002 there was one LHA with a statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) for medically treatable diseases based on five or more deaths from medically treatable diseases. 162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side had 9 deaths and an SMR of 5.26 in 2002.

• There were no LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for medically treatable diseases in 2002.

• In 2002, 39 LHAs had no deaths due to medically treatable diseases. The small number of deaths from medically treatable diseases in any individual year limits the scope for analysis.

• Over the 1997-2001 period, there were three LHAs with SMRs that were statistically significant and high for deaths due to medically treatable diseases (based on five or more deaths). The ratios for these LHAs (with number of medically treatable deaths in parentheses) were:

• There were three LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for deaths due to medically treatable diseases during the 1997-2001 period:

• Seven LHAs had no deaths from medically treatable diseases during the 1997-2001 period.
