  • There were 28,686 deaths in the province in 2002, and a total of 138,457 deaths in the 1997-2001 period from all causes of death.

  • There were 22 Local Health Areas (LHAs) with Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) for all causes of death which were statistically significant and high in 2002. The five highest (with number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    083 Central Coast (21) 3.90
    051 Snow Country (7) 319
    092 Nisga'a (14) 214
    052 Prince Rupert (123) 1.69
    049 Bella Coola Valley (24) 1.66

  • There were eight LHAs with SMR values for all causes that were statistically significant and low in 2002. The five lowest (with number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    064 Gulf Islands (111) 0.68
    038 Richmond (821) 0.83
    045 West Vancouver-Bowen Is. (452) 0.83
    063 Saanich (586) 0.84
    164 Vancouver West Side (783) 0.85

  • There were 38 LHAs with Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) for all causes of death which were statistically significant and high in 1997-2001. The five highest (with number of deaths in parentheses) were:
