Deaths from accidents and violence are shown in this table based on the Local Health Area (LHA) of usual residence of the decedent, and not the location where the death occurred.

  • The Age Standardized Mortality Rate (ASMR) for deaths from accidents and violence was 3.46 deaths per 10,000 standard population. There were 46 Local Health Areas (LHAs) which had ASMRs greater than the provincial rate and had five or more deaths from external causes. Of these LHAs, 11 had values that were at least twice the provincial rate. The LHAs with the highest ASMRs, based on five or more deaths from accidents and violence, (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    049 Bella Coola Valley (6) 17.77
    016 Keremeos (6) 13.82
    055/093 Burns Lake/Eutsuk (7) 9.97
    028 Quesnel (23) 9.56
    030 South Cariboo (8) 9.17

  • There were 20 LHAs with accidents and violence ASMRs below the provincial rate that had five or more deaths. The five LHAs with the lowest ASMR values in 2002 for deaths from accidents and violence (based on five or more deaths) were (number of deaths in parentheses):
    063 Saanich (15) 1.85
    164 Vancouver West Side (27) 1.89
    045 West Vancouver-Bowen Is. (15) 1.94
    038 Richmond (34) 1.94
    041 Burnaby (47) 1.99

  • During 2002, suicides (396 deaths) and motor vehicle accidents (399) each accounted for approximately one in four of the deaths from accidents and violence. Accidental falls (309) accounted for about a fifth and accidental poisoning (185) accounted for about one ninth of deaths from external causes.

  • Deaths from motor vehicle accidents (MVA) occurred most often in 2002 to residents of Surrey (25 deaths) and Kamloops (32).

  • Accidental poisoning deaths occurred most often in 2002 to residents of Surrey (21) and Vancouver Downtown East Side (19 deaths).

  • Deaths from accidental falls occurred most often in 2002 to residents of Greater Victoria (31 deaths), and Surrey (22).

  • Deaths from suicide occurred most often in 2002 to residents of Surrey (28) and Greater Victoria (25 deaths).
