  • Accidents and violence include all deaths from accidents, suicide, homicide, and deaths of undetermined intent. In 2002, there were 1,588 deaths from accidents and violence among B.C. residents.

  • Out of every 1,000 of all deaths in 2002, approximately:
    • 945 deaths were from natural causes (please refer to Table 21)
    • 55 deaths were from accidents and violence, including:
      • ~14 were motor vehicle accidents (399)
      • ~14 were suicide (396)
      • ~11 were accidental falls (309)
      • ~6 were accidental poisoning (185)
      • ~1 was from drowning/submersion (41)
      • ~1 was a victim of homicide (37)
      • ~1 was from other transport accidents (31)
      • ~1 was from fire (20)
      • ~1 was from an event of undetermined intent (20)

  • The Age Standardized Mortality Rate (ASMR) for deaths from accidents and violence was 3.46 deaths per 10,000 standard population in 2002. The ASMR for males was 5.04; the ASMR for females was 1.91 in 2002. On average, males accounted for more than two thirds of the deaths from accidents and violence (68.3%).

  • For males and females, the leading causes of death from accidents and violence are shown below, ranked by number of deaths in 2002. ASMRs per 10,000 male or female standard population are shown in parentheses.
