- Over the sixteen-year period, 1987-2002, 60.4% of the 2,801 deaths from HIV disease were to residents of the Vancouver Health Service Delivery Area (1,693 deaths). In 2002, 60 of the 104 HIV disease deaths were residents of Vancouver. Treatment facilities and other supports centered in the Vancouver Health Service Delivery Area account for some of the concentration of cases in that area.
- The only other Health Service Delivery Area with over one hundred HIV disease deaths during the 1987-2002 period were South Vancouver Island (224), Simon Fraser (209), South Fraser (163), and North Shore/Coast Garibaldi (134).
- The provincial rate for deaths due to HIV disease, for the period 1987-2002, was 4.77 per 100,000 population. The five Health Service Delivery Areas with the highest rates for deaths due to HIV disease (total deaths for 1987-2002 in parentheses) were:
