HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 28/FIGURE 17

  • There were 104 deaths from HIV disease in 2002, a decrease from 111 deaths in 2001. Since 1987, there have been 2,801 HIV disease deaths in the province.

  • The number of deaths from HIV disease peaked at 331 in 1994. The largest decrease occurred when the number of HIV disease deaths dropped from 252 in 1996 to 116 in 1997.

  • Over the 15 year period from 1987-2002, the majority of all HIV disease deaths (92.5%) were males (2,592 deaths); only 7.5% (209 deaths) were female. The largest number of female deaths due to HIV disease deaths (24) occurred in 2000.

  • For the 1987-2002 period, out of 100 deaths from HIV disease, approximately:
    • 8 were in the 20-29 year age group (236)
    • 41 were in the 30-39 year age group (1,135)
    • 35 were in the 40-49 year age group (967)
    • 12 were in the 50-59 year age group (325)
    • 5 were at least 60 years of age (130).

  • There were only 8 deaths from HIV disease in 1987-2002 to children and teens (age less than 20 years old).

  • Figure 17 shows the number of deaths due to HIV disease by age group for 1997-2002. Deaths in the 30-39 year age group decreased from 1997-2002, while those for the 40-49 year olds were higher in 2002 than in earlier years. Although the number of HIV disease deaths was small for the 20-29, 50-59, and 60+ age groups, these age groups showed a generally decreasing trend in recent years.
