  • There were 4.44 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2002. This infant mortality rate was below the rate for the 1997-2001 period (4.03).

  • Only thirteen Local Health Areas (LHAs) had five or more infant deaths in 2002, and 35 LHAs had no infant deaths in 2002. The highest infant mortality rate in 2002 (based on five or more infant deaths) was 17.307 in Cariboo-Chilcotin LHA (5 infant deaths), and the lowest was 2.93 in Coquitlam LHA (6 infant deaths).

  • There were four LHAs with infant mortality ratio that were statistically significant and high in 1997-2001, based on at least five deaths (with number of deaths in parentheses, and rate):
    078 Enderby 3.52 (5) 14.20
    055/093 Burns Lake/Eutsuk 2.91 (6) 11.74
    054 Smithers 2.08 (11) 8.40
    165 Vancouver Midtown 1.54 (34) 6.21

  • There were no LHAs with infant mortality ratios that were statistically significant and low in 1997-2001.

  • Two LHAs, 087 Stikine and 094 Telegraph Creek had no infant deaths in 1997-2001.
