  • There were five Local Health Areas (LHAs) with maternal complication ratios that were statistically significant and high (number of births with maternal complications in parentheses) in 2002. These were:
    069 Qualicum (144) 1.40
    068 Nanaimo (512) 1.28
    037 Delta (567) 1.10
    038 Richmond (876) 1.07
    036 Surrey (2,663) 1.05

  • Qualicum, Nanaimo, and Richmond also had statistically significant high ratios for the 1997-2001 period.

  • There were eight LHAs with maternal complication ratios that were statistically significant and low in 2002. The five LHAs with the lowest ratios that were statistically significant (number of births in parentheses) were:
    019 Revelstoke (23) 0.61
    021 Armstrong/Spallumcheen (21) 0.64
    005 Creston (51) 0.74
    002 Cranbrook (92) 0.78
    060 Peace River North (196) 0.83

  • There were 13 LHAs with statistically significant and high maternal complication ratios in 1997-2001. The five LHAs with the highest ratios that were statistically significant (number of births in parentheses) were:
    068 Nanaimo (2,551) 1.27
    069 Qualicum (779) 1.24
    161 Vancouver City Centre (1,945) 1.19
    029 Lillooet (178) 1.16
    072/084 Campbell River/V.I. West (1,224) 1.12

  • There were 15 LHAs with statistically significant and low maternal complication ratios in 1997-2001. The five LHAs with the lowest ratios that were statistically significant (number of births in parentheses) were:
