  • There were 11,144 cesarean deliveries of live born babies in 2002, and 24,404 spontaneous vertex deliveries. The 2002 cesarean section rate was 279.35 per 1,000 live births.

  • The cesarean ratio is the number of C-section births in the area, compared to the number that would be expected based on the provincial rate and the number of live births in the area. The four Local Health Areas (LHAs) with cesarean ratios that were statistically significant and high in 2002 (with the number of cesarean deliveries in parentheses) were:
    080 Kitimat (48) 1.36
    027 Cariboo-Chilcotin (104) 1.29
    061 Greater Victoria (517) 1.13
    036 Surrey (1,452) 1.06

  • There were six LHAs with cesarean ratios that were statistically significant and low in 2002 (with the number of cesarean deliveries in parentheses). These were:
    053 Upper Skeena (10) 0.49
    021 Armstrong/Spallumcheen (9) 0.51
    046 Sunshine Coast (38) 0.72
    070 Alberni (65) 0.78
    075 Mission (96) 0.82
    163 Vancouver North East (262) 0.83

  • The 2002 provincial live birth rate was 9.63 live births per 1,000 population. The five LHAs with the highest live birth rates in 2002 (actual numbers in parentheses) were:
    092 Nisga'a (32) 16.88
    081 Fort Nelson (98) 15.71
    049 Bella Coola Valley (53) 15.10
    060 Peace River North (459) 14.71
    051 Snow Country (11) 14.16

  • The five LHAs with the lowest live birth rates in 2002 (actual numbers in parentheses) were:
