  • The Province's 2002 Total Fertility Rate (TFR) was 1,351.48 births per 1,000 women of childbearing age (15 to 44 years of age). As shown in Table 3, this was the lowest rate since 1950. (See Glossary for a definition of total fertility rates.) (See Glossary for a definition of total fertility rates.)

  • There were 32 Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant TFRs that were higher than the Provincial TFR in 2002. The five highest were:
    092 Nisga'a 2,452.51  
    005 Creston 2,420.59  
    049 Bella Coola Valley 2,258.62  
    016 Keremeos 2,003.85  
    056 Nechako 1,993.61  


  • There were 12 LHAs with statistically significant TFRs that were lower than the Provincial TFR in 2002. The five lowest were:
    161 Vancouver City Centre 670.64  
    004 Windermere 860.62  
    087/094 Stikine/Telegraph Creek 866.49  
    164 Vancouver West Side 972.38  
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side 977.24  


  • There were 11.89 live births per 1,000 young women in the 15-19 year age group in 2002. This age-specific fertility rate for 2002 was lower than the 1997-2001 teenage fertility rate of 14.84.

  • For the 1997-2001 period, there were 44 LHAs with statistically significant teenage fertility rates that were higher than the provincial teenage fertility rate. The five LHAs with the highest statistically significant rates (number of births in parentheses) were:
    053 Upper Skeena (65) 54.03
    049 Bella Coola Valley (33) 53.66
    005 Creston (99) 52.69
    092 Nisga'a (21) 51.72
    083 Central Coast (16) 49.69


  • There were 20 LHAs in the 1997-2001 period with statistically significant teenage fertility rates that were lower than the provincial teenage fertility rate. The five LHAs with the lowest statistically significant rates (number of births in parentheses) were:

    045 West Vancouver-Bowen Is. (15) 1.89
    038 Richmond (122) 4.14
