- Out of the 39,893 live births in 2002, only 1,192 or 3.0% were multiple births.
- Of all live births in 2002:
- Almost all (97.0%) were singletons (38,701)
- One twin was born out of every 35 live births (1,146 twins)
- A triplet was born once in 867 live births (46 triplets)
- There were no quadruplets born in B.C. in 2002
- Older mothers, 35 years of age or older, had the highest proportion of multiple births; 346 births or 4.3% of live births to these mothers were multiple births. The 832 multiple births to mothers aged 20 to 34 years accounted for 2.8% of births to mothers in this age group. The lowest proportion of multiple births was to teenage mothers; the 14 twins born to teens accounted for 0.9% of births to mothers in this age group.
