- Of the 39,893 live births in 2002, almost half (44.1%) were first born (17,597), more than a third (36.8%) were second born (14,661), and about one in five (19.1%) was third born or greater (7,635).
- The average age of B.C. women giving birth in 2002 was 29.6 years. The average maternal age of first live births was 28.0 years, compared to 30.4, years for mothers of second live births and 31.8 years for mothers having their third or more live birth.
- In 2002, there were 1,608 live births to mothers younger than 20 years old, resulting in a teenage mother rate of 40.31 per 1,000 live births.
- There were 8,029 live births to mothers aged 35 or older in 2002. The elderly gravida rate has increased in recent years; the 2002 rate was 201.26 per 1,000 live births.
- There were 296 stillbirths in 2002. Including stillbirths, there were 40,189 total births in 2002 to B.C. residents. The 2002 stillbirth rate was 7.37 per 1,000 total births.
