The total fertility rate (TFR) is the number of births 1,000 women can expect over their childbearing years, based on current age specific fertility.
  • The total fertility rate in British Columbia in 2002 was 1,351, down slightly from 1,370 in 2001 and the lowest level since at least 1950.

  • The average woman in 2002 would have 1.4 live births in her lifetime, based on the TFR.

  • The total fertility rate is on a statistically significant (at least 95% level) long term downward trend.

  • There were 39,893 live births in British Columbia in 2002, down from 40,391 in 2001. 2002 marked the first time since 1979 that there were fewer than 40,000 live births in the province in a given year.
