  • The number of people in BC who died from cancer rose to 7,940 in 2002 from 7,787 in 2001. The ASMR for cancer fell from 15.83 per 10,000 to 15.70, driven by an aging and growing population in the province.

  • The downward trend in the ASMR for cancer is statistically significant at the 95% level.

  • Total deaths from lung cancer crept up in 2002 to a level of 2,013, up 21 deaths from the 1,992 deaths in 2001. The ASMR dipped to 4.07 per 10,000 people from 4.12 per 10,000 people in 2001.

  • The ASMR for lung cancer deaths in BC residents is on a statistically significant downward trend after being level until the early 1990s.
