  • In 2002, 78.6 % of the endocrine, nutritional and metabolic disease deaths were due to diabetes. There were 877 deaths from diabetes in 2002 up from 791 in 2001. The ASMR for diabetes increased as well, from 1.55 per 10,000 in 2001 to 1.66 per 10,000 in 2002.

  • The long term upward trend in the ASMR from diabetes is statistically significant at the 95% level.

  • The number of deaths from diseases of the nervous system fell slightly in 2002, from 1,157 in 2001 to 1,137 in 2002. The ASMR likewise fell from 2.19 per 10,000 in 2001 to 2.08 per 10,000 in 2002.

  • Despite the current drop in the ASMR, there is a statistically significant upward trend in the ASMR of diseases of the nervous system.
