- There were 2,103 babies born weighing less than 2,500 grams in 2002 compared to 2,010 in 2001. The rate increased to 52.72 per 1,000 live births in 2002 from 49.76 per 1,000 live births in 2001. The change is not statistically significant at the 95% level.
- There is no statistically significant trend in the rate of low birth weight babies over the period 1986-2002.

- In 2002 there were 62.27 low birth weight babies born for every 1,000 live births by an older mother, up slightly from 59.85 in 2001.
- There is a statistically significant (95% significance level) upward trend in the rate of low birth weight babies born to older mothers. Low birth weight live birth rates for teenage mothers and those between 20 and 35 years old show no statistically significant trend.
