DRUG-INDUCED DEATHS BY LOCAL HEALTH AREA
British Columbia, 1996-2000

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 45/FIGURE 27
- In 2001, there were four Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) for drug-induced deaths. These four LHAs and their SMRs for drug-induced deaths in 2001 (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
| 162 |
Vancouver Downtown E. Side |
6.14 |
(31) |
| 040 |
New Westminster |
2.61 |
(12) |
| 061 |
Greater Victoria |
1.87 |
(30) |
| 023 |
Central Okanagan |
1.69 |
(19) |
- All of the above noted LHAs had statistically significant and high SMRs in the five-year period from 1996 to 2000 except Central Okanagan.
- In 2001, 26 LHAs had no drug-induced deaths and there were no LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs (based on five or more deaths).
- There were five LHAs with statistically significant and high SMRs in the 1996-2000 period. The SMRs for these LHAs (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
| 162 |
Vancouver Downtown E. Side |
7.37 |
(300) |
| 040 |
New Westminster |
2.03 |

(202) |
| 165 |
Vancouver Midtown |
1.42 |
(85) |
- In the 1996-2000 period, 15 LHAs had statistically significant and low SMRs (based on five or more drug-related deaths). The five LHAs with the lowest SMRs (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
| 037 |
Delta |
0.35 |
(22) |
| 059 |
Peace River South |
0.39 |
(7) |

(9) |
| 069 |

(11) |
- Six LHAs had no drug-induced deaths in the 1996-2000 period. These were Fernie, Golden, Revelstoke, Lillooet, Snow Country and Stikine/Telegraph Creek. Out of these LHAs only Golden, Snow Country and Stikine/Telegraph Creek had no drug-induced deaths in 2001.
