- There were 312 deaths in the province from drug-induced causes in 2001. This grouping of underlying causes of death includes accidental drug poisonings, suicides involving drugs and adverse effects of drugs.
- Two thirds (67.6%) of drug-induced deaths in 2001 were males (211), compared to 101 female deaths.
- Drug-induced deaths occurred in every age group. More than half (54.5%) of the drug-induced deaths in the province occurred in the 25-44 age group (170 deaths) and a third (33.0%) were aged 45-64 (103 deaths).
- For males, 90.0% of drug-induced deaths were in the 25-44 and 45-64 age groups combined (190 deaths). Female drug-induced deaths were similarly concentrated in these age groups, and accounted for 82.2% of female deaths (83) in this category.
