  • There were nine LHAs with statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMRs) for alcohol-related deaths (based on five or more deaths) in 2001. The ratios for the five highest (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    053 Upper Skeena 3.83 (7)
    030 South Cariboo 3.77 (15)
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side 3.36 (81)
    032 Hope 2.29 (10)
    070 Alberni 2.17 (32)

  • All of the above LHAs with the exception of South Cariboo, also had statistically significant and high SMRs for alcohol-related deaths in 1996-2000.

  • In 2001, Snow Country was the only LHA that had no alcohol-related deaths.

  • There were eight LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for alcohol-related deaths (based on five or more deaths) in 2000. The five LHAs with low SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    037 Delta 0.34 (15)
    063 Saanich 0.43 (16)
    045 West Vancouver-Bowen Is. 0.46 (13)
    164 Vancouver West Side 0.52 (26)
    038 Richmond 0.53 (35)

  • In the 1996-2000 period, there were 31 LHAs with statistically significant and high SMRs for alcohol-related deaths. The five LHAs with the highest statistically significant SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    083 Central Coast 4.87 (16)
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side 4.43 (571)
    087/094 Stikine/Telegraph Creek 4.40 (16)
    029 Lillooet 2.87 (28)
    053 Upper Skeena 2.86 (27)

  • In the 1996-2000 period, there were 17 LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for alcohol-related deaths. The five LHAs with the lowest statistically significant SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
