FIGURE 22
DEATHS DUE TO MEDICALLY TREATABLE DISEASES
BY LOCAL HEALTH AREA
British Columbia, 1996-2000

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 38/FIGURE 22
- The deaths identified as medically treatable (see Glossary) occurred across the province, although the numbers were relatively small in Local Health Areas (LHAs) outside the lower mainland. In 2001 there were no LHAs with a statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) for medically treatable diseases based on five or more deaths from medically treatable diseases.
-
There were no LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for medically treatable diseases in 2001.
-
In 2001, 37 LHAs had no deaths due to medically treatable diseases. The small number of deaths from medically treatable diseases in any individual year limits the scope for analysis.
-
Over the 1996-2000 period, there were three LHAs with SMRs that were statistically significant and high for deaths due to medically treatable diseases. The ratios for these LHAs (with number of medically treatable deaths in parentheses) were:
| 162 |
Vancouver Downtown E. Side |
4.33 |
(36) |
| 075 |
Mission |
2.37 |
(13) |
| 040 |
New Westminster |
1.92 |
(16) |
- There were three LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for deaths due to medically treatable diseases during the 1996-2000 period:
| 037 |
Delta |
0.50 |
(8) |
| 038 |
Richmond |
0.52 |
(14) |
| 023 |
Central Okanagan |
0.58 |
(13) |
- Nine LHAs had no deaths from medically treatable diseases during the 1996-2000 period.
