  • There were three Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant and high Potential Years of Life Lost Index (PYLLI) for under 75 years of age, for external causes of death or accidents and violence, based on at least five deaths in 2001. These LHAs, along with their PYLLI values for 2001 (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    054 Smithers 2.94 (14)
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side 2.59 (48)
    034 Abbotsford 1.49 (43)

  • From the above LHAs, only Vancouver Downtown E. Side also had statistically significant and high PYLLI values for external causes of death (age under 75 years) in 1996-2000.

  • Ten LHAs had PYLLI values for external causes in 2001 that were statistically significant and low, based on five or more deaths. The PYLLI for the five lowest LHAs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    164 Vancouver West Side 0.20 (7)
    044 North Vancouver 0.25 (9)
    038 Richmond 0.39 (19)
    041 Burnaby 0.45 (29)
    037 Delta 0.47 (13)

  • All of the above LHAs also had statistically significant and low PYLLI values for external causes of death (age under 75 years) in 1996-2000.

  • In the 1996-2000 period, a total of 21 LHAs had PYLLI values for external causes that were statistically significant and high. The five LHAs with the highest statistically significant index values for this five-year period (number of deaths in parentheses) were:

  • In the 1996-2000 period, 13 LHAs had PYLLI values for external causes that were statistically significant and low, based on five or more deaths. The five LHAs with the lowest index values that were statistically significant for this five-year period (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
