- There were 28,164 deaths in the province in 2001, and a total of 137,611 deaths in the 1996-2000 period from all causes of death.
- There were 14 Local Health Areas (LHAs) with Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) for all causes of death which were statistically significant and high in 2001. The five highest (with number of deaths in parentheses) were:
