HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 31
Deaths from accidents and violence are shown in this table based on the Local Health Area (LHA) of usual residence of the decedent, and not the location where the death occurred.

  • The Age Standardized Mortality Rate (ASMR) for deaths from accidents and violence was 3.19 deaths per 10,000 standard population. There were 45 Local Health Areas (LHAs) which had ASMRs greater than the provincial rate and had five or more deaths from external causes. Of these LHAs, 14 had values that were at least twice the provincial rate. The five highest ASMRs, based on five or more deaths from accidents and violence, (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    016 Keremeos 11.53 (5)
    050 Queen Charlotte 10.52 (6)
    030 South Cariboo 9.06 (6)
    031 Merritt 8.74 (11)
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side 8.02 (51)

  • There were 20 LHAs with accidents and violence ASMRs below the provincial rate that had five or more deaths. The five LHAs with the lowest ASMR values in 2001 for deaths from accidents and violence (based on five or more deaths) were (number of deaths in parentheses):
    045 West Vancouver-Bowen Is. 0.57 (5)
    164 Vancouver West Side 1.10 (19)
    044 North Vancouver 1.19 (16)
    038 Richmond 1.55 (28)
    037 Delta 1.58 (16)

  • Stikine/Telegraph Creek was the only LHA that had no deaths from accidents and violence in 2001.

  • During 2001, suicides (315 deaths) and motor vehicle accidents (307) each accounted for more than one in five of the deaths from accidents and violence. Accidental falls (296) accounted for about a fifth and accidental poisoning (241) accounted for about one sixth of deaths from external causes.

  • Deaths from motor vehicle accidents (MVA) occurred most often in 2001 to residents of Surrey (29 deaths), Abbotsford (18), Prince George (14), Kamloops (13) and Greater Victoria (10).

  • Accidental poisoning deaths occurred most often in 2001 to residents of Vancouver Downtown East Side (31 deaths), Greater Victoria (24), Surrey (17), Central Okanagan (11), Kamloops (10), and Burnaby (10).

  • Deaths from accidental falls occurred most often in 2001 to residents of Greater Victoria (31 deaths), Central Okanagan (18), Surrey (16), Kamloops (13), Richmond (9), Nanaimo (9) and Langley (9).

  • Deaths from suicide occurred most often in 2001 to residents of Surrey (19), Greater Victoria (16 deaths), Central Okanagan (15), Coquitlam (13), Prince George (12), and Maple Ridge (12).
