Table, Deaths Due to HIV Disease by Age Group

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 28/FIGURE 17
  • There were 109 deaths from HIV disease in 2001, a decrease from 122 deaths in 2000. Since 1987, there have been 2,685 HIV disease deaths in the province.

  • The number of deaths from HIV disease peaked at 330 in 1994. The largest decrease occurred when the number of HIV disease deaths dropped from 250 in 1996 to 115 in 1997.

  • Over the 15 year period from 1987-2001, the majority of all HIV disease deaths (93.1%) were males (2,501 deaths); only 6.9% (184 deaths) were female. The largest number of female deaths due to HIV disease deaths (24) occurred in 2000.

  • For the 1987-2001 period, out of 100 deaths from HIV disease, approximately:
    • 9 were in the 20-29 year age group (231)
    • 41 were in the 30-39 year age group (1,105)
    • 34 were in the 40-49 year age group (915)
    • 11 were in the 50-59 year age group (305)
    • 5 were at least 60 years of age (121).

  • There were only 8 deaths from HIV disease in 1987-2001 to children and teens (age less than 20 years old).

  • Figure 17 shows the number of deaths due to HIV disease by age group for 1996-2001. In the 30-39 year age group, the annual number of deaths from HIV disease decreased from more than a hundred in 1996, to less than 50 each year from 1997-2001. The 40-49 age group had 77 deaths in 1996, and less than 50 each year from 1997-2001. Although the number of HIV disease deaths was small for the 20-29, 50-59, and 60+ age groups, these age groups showed a decreasing trend followed by small increases in HIV disease deaths in recent years.
