HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 14
  • There were 37,325 live births with healthy birth weights (2,500 to 4,499 grams) in 2001. Out of approximately every 100 of these births:
    • 4 were births to teenage mothers (1,639)
    • 44 were births to mothers aged 20 to 29 years (16,385)
    • 49 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (18,137)
    • 3 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (1,164)

  • There were 2,008 live births with low birth weight (less than 2,500 grams) in 2001. Out of every 100 of these births, approximately:
    • 5 were births to teenage mothers (102)
    • 43 were births to mothers aged 20 to 29 years (854)
    • 47 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (945)
    • 5 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (107)

  • There were 1,000 live births with high birth weight (4,500 grams or over) in 2001. Out of every 100 of these births, approximately:
    • 4 were births to teenage mothers (35)
    • 42 were births to mothers aged 20 to 29 years (417)
    • 51 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (511)
    • 4 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (37)

  • Nine out of ten (92.7%) births to mothers in the four maternal age groups from 20-24 to 35-39 had "healthy" birth weights. One in 21 (4.8%) births in these age groups had a low birth weight and one in 40 (2.5%) had a high birth weight.

  • Of live births to teenage mothers (less than 20 years of age), 92.3% had healthy birth weights, 5.7% had low and 2.0% had high birth weights. For mothers in the 40 or older age group, 89.0% of live births had healthy birth weights, 8.2% had low and 2.8% had high birth weights.
