  • The Province's 2001 Total Fertility Rate (TFR) was 1,372.54 births per 1,000 women of childbearing age (15 to 44 years of age). As shown in Table 3, Trends of Total Fertility Rates, this was the lowest rate in the last 52 years. (See Glossary for a definition of total fertility rates.) (See Glossary for a definition of total fertility rates.)

  • There were 19 Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant TFRs that were higher than the Provincial TFR in 2001. The five highest were:
    016 Keremeos 1,998.89  
    029 Lillooet 1,995.87  
    036 Surrey 1,992.31  
    034 Abbotsford 1,985.20  
    005 Creston 1,981.29  


  • There were 16 LHAs with statistically significant TFRs that were lower than the Provincial TFR in 2001. The five lowest were:
    161 Vancouver City Centre 525.29  
    004 Windermere 898.89  
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side 899.43  
    164 Vancouver West Side 966.27  
    001 Fernie 1,048.73  


  • There were 13.28 live births per 1,000 young women in the 15-19 year age group in 2001. This age-specific fertility rate for 2001 was lower than the 1996-2000 teenage fertility rate of 15.88.

  • For the 1996-2000 period, there were 38 LHAs with statistically significant teenage fertility rates that were higher than the provincial teenage fertility rate. The five LHAs with the highest statistically significant rates (number of births in parentheses) were:
    049 Bella Coola Valley 55.37 (34)
    053 Upper Skeena 50.04 (65)
    085 Vancouver Island North 48.39 (138)
    092 Nisga'a 48.28 (21)
    005 Creston 43.93 (85)


  • There were 20 LHAs in the 1996-2000 period with statistically significant teenage fertility rates that were lower than the provincial teenage fertility rate. The five LHAs with the lowest statistically significant rates (number of births in parentheses) were:
