  • Out of 100 live births in 2001, approximately:
    • 4 were to teenage mothers, less than 20 years old (1,776)
    • 44 were to mothers 20 to 29 years old (17,674)
    • 49 were to mothers 30 to 39 years old (19,616)
    • 3 were to mothers 40 years of age or older (1,310)

  • Out of 100 live births in 2001, approximately:
    • 1 was to a teenage father, less than 20 years old (483)
    • 28 were to fathers 20 to 29 years old (11,321)
    • 53 were to fathers 30 to 39 years old (21,450)
    • 12 were to fathers 40 years of age or older (4,743)
    • 6 did not include father's age (2,379)

  • There were 385 live births (1.0%) where both parents were teenagers (less than 20 years of age) and 1,055 where only one of the parents was a teenager (2.6%).

  • There were 834 live births (2.1%) where both parents were 40 years of age or older and 4,327 births where only one of the parents was 40 years or older (10.7%).

  • One quarter (24.4%) of the live births in 2001 were reported as out-of-wedlock (9,864). The actual number of out-of-wedlock births may be even higher since this excludes births where it was not known if the parents were married to each other.
