  • Of the 40,367 live births in 2001, almost half (44.1%) were first born (17,823), more than a third (37.1%) were second born (14,971), and about one in five (18.8%) was third born or greater (7,581).

  • The average age of B.C. women giving birth in 2001 was 29.5 years. The average maternal age of first live births was 27.9 years, compared to 30.3, years for mothers of second live births and 31.8 years for mothers having their third or more live birth.

  • In 2001, there were 1,776 live births to mothers younger than 20 years old, resulting in a teenage mother rate of 43.99 per 1,000 live births.

  • There were 7,966 live births to mother aged 35 or older in 2001. The elderly gravida rate has increased in recent years; the 2001 rate was 197.30 per 1,000 live births.

  • There were 281 stillbirths in 2001. Including stillbirths, there were 40,657 total births in 2001 to B.C. residents. The 2001 stillbirth rate was 6.91 per 1,000 total births.
