There were 303 deaths in the province from drug-induced causes in 2000.
Seven out of ten drug-induced deaths in 2000 were the result of accidental poisonings by drugs and medicaments (218 deaths) and one fifth of the drug-induced deaths (21.1%) were the result of suicide by drugs and medicaments (64 deaths).
Of all the 344 suicide deaths in B.C. in 2000 (presented in Table 30), 64 suicides, or approximately one fifth of suicide deaths (18.6%), were drug-induced.
The proportion of drug-induced deaths due to accidental poisonings was higher for males (77.4%) than for females (60.0%) while suicides accounted for a higher proportion of female drug-induced deaths (30.5%) than male (16.8%).
