  • There were 303 deaths in the province from drug-induced causes in 2000.

  • Seven out of ten drug-induced deaths in 2000 were the result of accidental poisonings by drugs and medicaments (218 deaths) and one fifth of the drug-induced deaths (21.1%) were the result of suicide by drugs and medicaments (64 deaths).

  • Of all the 344 suicide deaths in B.C. in 2000 (presented in Table 30), 64 suicides, or approximately one fifth of suicide deaths (18.6%), were drug-induced.

  • The proportion of drug-induced deaths due to accidental poisonings was higher for males (77.4%) than for females (60.0%) while suicides accounted for a higher proportion of female drug-induced deaths (30.5%) than male (16.8%).
