  • There were 303 deaths in the province from drug-induced causes in 2000. This grouping of underlying causes of death includes, accidental drug poisonings, suicides involving drugs and adverse effects of drugs.

  • Two thirds (68.6%) of drug-induced deaths in 2000 were males (208), compared to 95 female deaths.

  • Drug induced deaths occurred in every age group 15 years of age or older. More than half (57.4%) of the drug-induced deaths in the province occurred in the 25-44 age group (174 deaths) and almost one third (31.7%) were aged 45-64 (96 deaths).

  • For males, 90.9% of drug-induced deaths were in the 25-44 and 45-64 age groups combined (189 deaths). Female drug-induced deaths were similarly concentrated in these age groups, and accounted for 85.2% of female deaths (81) in this category.
