  • In 2000, there were 13 LHAs with statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMRs) for alcohol-related deaths. The ratios for the five highest (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    029 Lillooet 6.15 (12)
    053 Upper Skeena 5.30 (9)
    017 Princeton 3.24 (9)
    085 Vancouver Island North 3.00 (14)
    052 Prince Rupert 2.81 (18)

  • All the above LHAs, with the exception of Princeton, also had statistically significant and high SMRs for alcohol-related deaths in 1995-1999.

  • In 2000, Bella Coola Valley and Nisga'a had no alcohol-related deaths.

  • There were nine LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for alcohol-related deaths (based on five or more deaths) in 2000. The five LHAs with low SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
    164 Vancouver West Side 0.31 (18)
    045 West Vancouver-Bowen Is. 0.36 (11)
    038 Richmond 0.52 (31)
    166 Vancouver South 0.60 (34)
    063 Saanich 0.62 (21)

  • In the 1995-1999 period, there were 28 LHAs with statistically significant and high SMRs for alcohol- related deaths. The five LHAs with the highest statistically significant SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:

  • In the 1995-1999 period, there were 18 LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for alcohol-related deaths. The five LHAs with the lowest statistically significant SMRs (number of deaths in parentheses) were:
