Table, Potential Years of Life Lost by Age Group and Major Causes of Death (Age Under 75 Years)

  • In 2000, there were 225 deaths in the under 15 years old age group, 128 young men and 97 young women. These deaths resulted in a total of 16,171 potential years of life lost (PYLL). Perinatal conditions and congenital anomalies accounted for 37.3% and 21.5% of PYLL, respectively. The Potential Years of Life Lost Standardized Rate (PYLLSR) in this age group was 5.49 years of life lost per 1,000 standard population in the age group.

  • In the 15-24 age group, a total of 17,110 potential years of life were lost from the 312 deaths in 2000, resulting in a PYLLSR of 4.78 potential years of life lost per 1,000 standard population in this age group. Males accounted for 217 of these deaths and had a considerably higher PYLLSR (6.52) than females (2.97). Motor vehicle accidents were a major cause of death in this age group, responsible for 85 deaths and 4,708 PYLL.

  • In the "prime of life" 25-44 age group, there were 1,295 deaths in 2000, producing a total of 48,943 potential years of life lost and a PYLL standardized rate of 13.25 PYLL per 1,000 standard population in this age group. Among the 851 male deaths, the highest PYLL standardized rates were for suicide (2.55) and accidental poisoning (2.49). For the 444 female deaths, the highest PYLLSR was for cancer (2.82). The PYLLSR for males (17.57) was almost twice the rate for females (8.92).

  • In the 45-74 age group, the 8,986 deaths resulted in a total of 97,730 potential years of life lost in 2000, and a PYLLSR of 21.77 per 1,000 standard population in this age group. Cancer was the leading cause of death in this category; the 3,823 deaths from cancer were responsible for a total of 42,108 potential years of life lost, and a PYLLSR of 9.48. As in other age groups, the PYLLSR for males (26.93) was considerably higher than for females (16.70).
