  • Over the fourteen-year period, 1987-2000, 60.6% of the 2,573 deaths from HIV disease were to residents of the Vancouver Health Region (1,560 deaths). In 2000, 73 of the 122 HIV disease deaths were residents of Vancouver. Many individuals infected with HIV disease may have moved to the Vancouver Health Region on a permanent basis to be closer to treatment facilities or other support services.

  • The only other health regions with over one hundred HIV disease deaths during the 1987-2000 period were the Capital (198), South Fraser Valley (143), and North Shore (112).

  • The provincial rate for deaths due to HIV disease, for the period 1987-2000, was 5.10 per 100,000 population. The five health regions with the highest rates for deaths due to HIV disease (total deaths for 1987-2000 in parentheses) were:
