  • There were 122 deaths from HIV disease in 2000, an increase from 100 deaths in 1999. Since 1987, there have been 2,573 HIV disease deaths in the province.

  • The number of deaths from HIV disease peaked at 331 in 1994. The largest decrease occurred when the number of HIV disease deaths dropped from 250 in 1996 to 115 in 1997.

  • Over the 14 year period from 1987-2000, the majority of all HIV disease deaths (93.7%) were males (2,410 deaths); only 6.3% (163 deaths) were female.

  • For the 1987-2000 period, out of 100 deaths from HIV disease, approximately:
    • 9 were in the 20-29 age group (227)
    • 42 were in the 30-39 age group (1,070)
    • 34 were in the 40-49 age group (875)
    • 11 were in the 50-59 age group (283)
    • 4 were at least 60 years of age (110).

  • There were only 8 deaths from HIV disease in 1987-2000 to children and teens (age less than 20 years old).

  • Figure 17 shows the number of deaths due to HIV disease by age group for 1995-2000. In the 30-39 age group, the annual number of deaths from HIV disease decreased from more than a hundred in both 1995 and 1996, to less than 50 each year from 1997-2000. The 40-49 age group had more than 100 deaths in 1995, just over 75 in 1996, and less than 50 each year from 1997-2000. Although the number of HIV disease deaths was small for the 20-29, 50-59, and 60+ age groups, these age groups showed a decreasing trend followed by small increases in HIV disease deaths in recent years.
