  • There were 148 infant deaths (under one year of age) and 279 stillbirths in 2000, a decrease from the 158 infant deaths and 294 stillbirths in 1999.

  • In 2000, perinatal complications were the cause of death for more than half (54.1%) of the infant deaths (80) and more than four fifths (83.9%) of the stillbirths (234). This cause includes the stillbirths with undetermined cause of death (42). The infant mortality rate for perinatal complications was 19.77 deaths per 10,000 live births, and the stillbirth rate for this cause was 57.43 per 10,000 total births.

  • Congenital anomalies were responsible for one fifth (21.6%) of infant deaths (32) and about one out of eight (13.6%) stillbirths (38) in 2000. The infant mortality rate for congenital anomalies was 7.91 deaths per 10,000 live births, and the stillbirth rate was 9.33 per 10,000 total births.

  • Of the 82 deaths in the early neonatal period (age at death under 7 days), four fifths (80.5%) were due to perinatal complications (66 deaths). The most common of these were infant affected by maternal factors (27), respiratory and cardiovascular disorders (18), and premature/postmature and fetal growth disorders (12).

  • There were 44 infant deaths in the post neonatal period (28 to 364 days after birth) including 9 due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It should be noted that some of the infant deaths that are still under investigation may later be identified as SIDS.
