  • There were 3.66 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2000. This infant mortality rate was well below the rate for the 1995-1999 period (4.68).

  • Only five Local Health Areas (LHAs) had five or more infant deaths in 2000, and 28 LHAs had no infant deaths in 2000. The highest infant mortality rate in 2000 (based on five or more infant deaths) was 12.37 in Vancouver Downtown E. Side LHA (6 infant deaths), and the lowest was 3.43 in Burnaby LHA (7 infant deaths).

  • There was only one LHA with infant mortality ratio that was statistically significant and high in 1995-1999, based on at least five deaths (with number of deaths in parentheses, and rate):
    165 Vancouver Midtown 1.60 (44) 7.47

  • The only two LHAs with infant mortality ratios that were statistically significant and low in 1995-1999 (with number of deaths in parentheses, and rates) were:
    161 Vancouver City Centre 0.42 (6) 1.98
    164 Vancouver West Side 0.44 (10) 2.05

  • Four LHAs had no infant deaths in 1995-1999.
