- There were 148 infant deaths (under one year of age) in 2000, for an infant mortality rate of 3.66 infant deaths per 1,000 live births.
- In 2000, the highest infant mortality rate shown in this table was 6.03 deaths per 1,000 live births for mothers aged 20-24 years of age. The rate for teenage mothers (age less than 20 years old) was not shown since there were less than five deaths in this group. The lowest rate was 2.77 for mothers aged 25-29, and the rates increased with increasing maternal age to 4.76 for mother aged 40 or older.
- Low birth weight (less than 2,500 grams) and very low birth weight (less than 1,500 grams) are risk factors for infant mortality. Two thirds (67.6%) of the infants who died in 2000 had low birth weight (100 infant deaths), and more than half (53.4%) had very low birth weight (79).
- For births with very low birth weight (less than 1,500 grams), the infant mortality rate was 254.02 per 1,000 live births or more than one in four. The mortality rate decreased significantly with increased birth weight; there were 11.89 infant deaths per 1,000 live births with birth weight between 1,500 and 2,499 grams, and only 1.22 infant deaths for every 1,000 live births with normal birth weight (2,500 grams or more).
