- There were 37,362 live births with healthy birth weights (2,500 to 4,499 grams) in 2000. Out of approximately every 100 of these births:
- 5 were births to teenage mothers (1,701)
- 46 were births to mothers aged 20 to 29 years (16,999)
- 47 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (17,533)
- 3 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (1,129)
- There were 2,077 live births with low birth weight (less than 2,500 grams) in 2000. Out of every 100 of these births, approximately:
- 5 were births to teenage mothers (104)
- 43 were births to mothers aged 20 to 29 years (889)
- 48 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (992)
- 4 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (92)
- There were 1,016 live births with high birth weight (4,500 grams or over) in 2000. Out of every 100 of these births, approximately:
- 3 were births to teenage mothers (31)
- 46 were births to mothers aged 20 to 29 years (465)
- 47 were births to mothers aged 30 to 39 years (481)
- 4 were births to mothers 40 years of age or older (39)
- Nine out of ten (92.4%) births to mothers in the four maternal age groups from 20-24 to 35-39 had "healthy" birth weights. One in 20 (5.0%) of births in these age groups had low birth weight and one in 40 (2.5%) had high birth weights.
- Of live births to teenage mothers (less than 20 years of age), 92.6% had healthy birth weights, 5.7% had low and 1.7% had high birth weights. For mothers in the 40 or older age group, 89.5% of live births had healthy birth weights, 7.3% had low and 3.1% had high birth weights.
