Note: ASFR-Age-Specific Fertility Rate - Live births per 1,000 women age 15 to 19 years. Refer to Figure 1 to clarify geographical location of Local Health Areas.

  • The province's 2000 Total Fertility Rate (TFR) was 1,376.92 births per 1,000 women of child bearing age (15 to 44 years of age). As shown in Table 3, Trends of Total Fertility Rates, this was the lowest rate in the last 51 years. (See Glossary for a definition of total fertility rates.)

  • There were 22 Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant TFRs that were higher than the Provincial TFR in 2000. The five highest were:
    092 Nisga'a 2,249.70  
    060 Peace River North 2,157.11  
    005 Creston 2,059.22  
    054 Smithers 2,024.70  
    016 Keremeos 2,014.97  

  • There were 9 LHAs with statistically significant TFRs that were lower than the Provincial TFR in 2000. The five lowest were:
    161 Vancouver City Centre 622.32  
    164 Vancouver West Side 929.82  
    162 Vancouver Downtown E. Side 1,005.75  
    009 Castlegar 1,050.06  
    061 Greater Victoria 1,069.20  

  • There were 13.83 live births per 1,000 young women in the 15-19 age group in 2000. This age-specific fertility rate for 2000 was lower than the 1995-1999 teenage fertility rate of 17.41.

  • For the 1995-1999 period, there were 41 LHAs with statistically significant teenage fertility rates that were higher than the provincial teenage fertility rate. The five LHAs with the highest statistically significant rates (number of births in parentheses) were:
    049 Bella Coola Valley 59.75 (34)
    092 Nisga'a 55.42 (22)
    053 Upper Skeena 54.47 (67)
    085 Vancouver Island North 51.78 (150)
    052 Prince Rupert 45.77 (159)

  • There were 19 LHAs in the 1995-1999 period with statistically significant teenage fertility rates that were lower than the provincial teenage fertility rate. The five LHAs with the lowest statistically significant rates (number of births in parentheses) were:
