  • Out of 100 live births in 2000, approximately:
    • 5 were to teenage mothers, less than 20 years old (1,836)
    • 45 were to mothers 20 to 29 years old (18,361)
    • 47 were to mothers 30 to 39 years old (19,009)
    • 3 were to mothers 40 years of age or older (1,261)

  • Out of 100 live births in 2000, approximately:
    • 1 was to a teenage father, less than 20 years old (451)
    • 29 were to fathers 20 to 29 years old (11,628)
    • 52 were to fathers 30 to 39 years old (21,137)
    • 11 were to fathers 40 years of age or older (4,598)
    • 7 did not include father's age (2,653)

  • There were 388 live births (1.0%) where both parents were teenagers (less than 20 years of age) and 1,040 where only one of the parents was a teenager (2.6%).

  • There were 744 live births (1.8%) where both parents were 40 years of age or older and 4,304 births where only one of the parents was 40 years or older (10.6%).

  • One quarter (24.3%) of the live births in 2000 were reported as out-of-wedlock (9,830). The actual number of out-of-wedlock births may be even higher since this excludes births where it was not known if the parents were married to each other.
