  • Of the 40,467 live births in 2000, almost half (44.8%) were first born (18,134), more than a third (35.8%) were second born (14,488), and about one in five (19.4%) was third born or greater (7,836).

  • The average age of B.C. women giving birth in 2000 was 29.4 years. The average maternal age of first live births was 27.8 years, compared to 30.1 years for mothers of second live births and 31.7 years for mothers having their third or more live birth.

  • In 2000, there were 1,836 live births to mothers younger than 20 years old, resulting in a teenage mother rate of 45.37 per 1,000 live births (calculated from data presented in this table).

  • There were 7,803 live births to mother aged 35 or older in 2000. The elderly gravida rate has increased in recent years; the 2000 rate was 192.82 per 1,000 live births.

  • There were 279 stillbirths in 2000. Including stillbirths, there were 40,746 total births in 2000 to B.C. residents. The 2000 stillbirth rate was 6.85 per 1,000 total births.
