Appendix 1
STATISTICAL SUMMARIES BY HEALTH REGION
LOCAL HEALTH AREA AND COMMUNITY

BRITISH COLUMBIA, 2000

Preamble to Appendix 1

British Columbia is a large, geographically diverse province. The majority of the population is concentrated in the southwestern corner of the province, with the majority of the remaining population concentrated in the major cities of Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George, and Nanaimo, or along the border with the United States. Large areas of the province are sparsely populated. Health care services tend to be concentrated in the areas of greater population, especially in the metropolitan areas of Vancouver and Victoria.

Appendix 1 provides summary details of the 2000 vital statistics for health regions (HR), local health areas (LHA), and incorporated communities. The health regions and local health areas correspond to, or can be aggregated to, the boundaries of the regional health authorities (Regional Health Boards, Community Health Service Societies, and Community Health Councils). Information presented includes the number of live births, stillbirths, and deaths by gender, and the number of marriages. Live births and stillbirths are assigned to the geographic areas based on usual residence of the mother. Deaths are assigned to geographic areas based on the usual residence of the decedent. Marriages are assigned to geographic areas based on the place where the marriage ceremony was performed.

Population estimates, average age, and life expectancy at birth (1996-2000) were obtained from BC STATS, Ministry of Finance and Corporate Relations.
