HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 47

  • In 1999, there were 21,616 marriages in British Columbia, almost identical to the 21,764 marriages in 1998. The 1999 marriage rate, 5.4 marriages per 1,000 population, was the lowest rate since 1950, and was unchanged from 1998. Further information is presented in Table 1 and Figure 3.

  • Out of approximately every 100 marriages in 1999:

    • 61 involved single brides and grooms (13,097)
    • 11 involved single brides and divorced or widowed grooms (2,292)
    • 10 involved single grooms and divorced or widowed brides (2,195)
    • 19 involved brides and grooms who were both divorced or widowed (4,032)
  • Approximately a quarter (25.7%) of all brides (5,547) and a quarter (26.0%) of all grooms (5,626) who were married in 1999 had previously been divorced.
