HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 45/FIGURE 27
- In 1999, there were five Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) for drug-induced deaths. These five LHAs and their SMRs for drug-induced deaths in 1999 (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
| 162 | Vancouver Downtown E. Side | 6.27 | (38) |
| 161 | Vancouver City Centre | 2.26 | (26) |
| 040 | New Westminster | 2.26 | (13) |
| 061 | Greater Victoria | 2.13 | (43) |
| 036 | Surrey | 1.47 | (48) |
- All of these LHAs, with the exception of Surrey, also had statistically significant and high SMRs in the five-year period from 1994 to 1998.
- In 1999, 32 LHAs had no drug-induced deaths and there were no LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs (based on five or more deaths).
- There were seven LHAs with statistically significant and high SMRs in the 1994-1998 period. The SMRs for these LHAs (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
| 162 | Vancouver Downtown E. Side | 8.28 | (330) |
| 161 | Vancouver City Centre | 2.29 | (163) |
| 040 | New Westminster | 2.28 | (85) |
| 165 | Vancouver Midtown | 1.62 | (96) |
| 163 | Vancouver North East | 1.34 | (81) |
| 061 | Greater Victoria | 1.28 | (174) |
| 024 | Kamloops | 1.27 | (80) |
- In the 1994-1998 period, 20 LHAs had statistically significant and low SMRs (based on five or more drug-related deaths). The five LHAs with the lowest SMRs (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:
| 059 | Peace River South | 0.38 | (7) |
| 027 | Cariboo-Chilcotin | 0.39 | (7) |
| 042 | Maple Ridge | 0.43 | (20) |
| 028 | Quesnel | 0.43 | (7) |
| 006/007 | Kootenay Lake/Nelson | 0.44 | (8) |
- Three LHAs had no drug-induced deaths in the 1994-1998 period. These were Fernie, Golden and Stikine/Telegraph Creek. They also had no drug-induced deaths in 1999.
