Table, Drug-Induced Deaths by Local Health Area

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 45/FIGURE 27
  • In 1999, there were five Local Health Areas (LHAs) with statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) for drug-induced deaths. These five LHAs and their SMRs for drug-induced deaths in 1999 (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:

    162Vancouver Downtown E. Side6.27(38)
    161Vancouver City Centre2.26(26)
    040New Westminster2.26(13)
    061Greater Victoria2.13(43)
    036Surrey1.47(48)

  • All of these LHAs, with the exception of Surrey, also had statistically significant and high SMRs in the five-year period from 1994 to 1998.

  • In 1999, 32 LHAs had no drug-induced deaths and there were no LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs (based on five or more deaths).

  • There were seven LHAs with statistically significant and high SMRs in the 1994-1998 period. The SMRs for these LHAs (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:

    162Vancouver Downtown E. Side8.28(330)
    161Vancouver City Centre2.29(163)
    040New Westminster2.28(85)
    165Vancouver Midtown1.62(96)
    163Vancouver North East1.34(81)
    061Greater Victoria1.28(174)
    024Kamloops1.27(80)

  • In the 1994-1998 period, 20 LHAs had statistically significant and low SMRs (based on five or more drug-related deaths). The five LHAs with the lowest SMRs (number of drug-induced deaths in parentheses) were:

    059Peace River South0.38(7)
    027Cariboo-Chilcotin0.39(7)
    042Maple Ridge0.43(20)
    028Quesnel0.43(7)
    006/007Kootenay Lake/Nelson0.44(8)

  • Three LHAs had no drug-induced deaths in the 1994-1998 period. These were Fernie, Golden and Stikine/Telegraph Creek. They also had no drug-induced deaths in 1999.
