[Click here to download a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet of the above table]

HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 43
  • There were 385 deaths in the province from drug-induced causes in 1999. This grouping of underlying causes of death includes drug dependence, accidental drug poisonings, and suicides involving drugs.

  • Seven out of every ten (70.6%) drug-induced deaths in 1999 were males (272), compared to 113 female deaths.

  • Drug induced deaths occurred in every age group 15 years of age or older. More than half (53.8%) of the drug-induced deaths in the province occurred in the 25-44 age group (207 deaths); this was a significant cause of death in the 25-44 age group, accounting for one in six deaths (15.1%) from all 1,369 deaths in the age group (shown in Table 23).

  • For males, 86.0% of drug-induced deaths were in the 25-44 and 45-64 age groups (234 deaths out of 272 deaths). Female drug-induced deaths were similarly concentrated in these age groups, and accounted for 79.7% or 90 out of 113 female deaths in this category.
