HIGHLIGHTS TO TABLE 38/FIGURE 22
- The deaths identified as medically treatable (see Glossary) occurred across the province, although the numbers were relatively small in Local Health Areas (LHAs) outside the lower mainland. In 1999, there were only two LHAs with statistically significant and high Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) for medically treatable diseases. The ratios for these LHAs (with number of medically treatable deaths in parentheses) were:
| 162 | Vancouver Downtown E. Side | 5.85 | (12) |
| 035 | Langley | 2.39 | (10) |
- Vancouver Downtown East Side LHA also had statistically significant and high SMRs for medically treatable diseases in the 1994-1998 period.
- There were no LHAs with statistically significant and low SMRs for medically treatable diseases in 1999.
- In 1999, 34 LHAs had no deaths due to medically treatable diseases. The small number of deaths from medically treatable diseases in any individual year limits the scope for analysis.
- Over the 1994-1998 period, the SMRs were statistically significant and high in two LHAs. The ratios for these LHAs (with number of medically treatable deaths in parentheses) were:
| 162 | Vancouver Downtown E. Side | 4.39 | (34) |
| 052 | Prince Rupert | 2.60 | (7) |
- There was one LHA with statistically significant and low SMRs for medically treatable diseases during the 1994-1998 period:
- During the 1994-1998 period, nine LHAs had no deaths from medically treatable diseases.
